Why is a PIN required for an ATM?
It is required for authentication purposes. The system does not
have any means of finding out if the person using the ATM card is
the actual customer. So, the banks issue a PIN number to the
customer and ask him/her to keep it safely and not share with
anyone else. This lets the bank assume that anyone who knows the
correct PIN number for an ATM card is a valid customer and lets
them use the ATM machine. So, it is our responsibility to keep our
PIN numbers safe.
